Admission in grade 5 for year 2017

My daughter turning 10 year this August and currently studying in grade 4 in Singapore. Her session will be completing in November and she can move to next grade i.e. grade 5th. However, we are moving to Dubai in August / sept this year and would expect that she will get admission in grade 5 (for 2017). As she will not be completing her grade 4 in Singapore therefore we would only be able to produce  school leaving certificate confirming that she was studying in grade 4. Need guidance and suggestions to handle this situation.

Hi Waseem,

It may be possible for your daughter to enter grade 5 dependent in part on her date of birth (which means she will have turned 10 by 31st August) and also based on assessment.  If the schools you apply to feel that she is academically able to move to the next grade, and she has completed 2 of the 3 semesters, they can apply for special approval from the KHDA.  You will need to confirm this with the schools to which you apply.  You don’t mention which curriculum she is currently following – this will potentially have an impact on whether she is felt to be able to cope with an accelerated promotion to grade 5.

Thanks for your feedback. It is useful.

As for as my understanding, Singapore has its own educational system and curriculum. The four years, from primary 1 to 4, provide a foundation in English, mother tongue (which includes Standard Mandarin, Malay, Tamil, Hindi, Urdu etc), Mathematics and Science. Other subjects include Civics and Moral Education, arts and crafts, music, health education, social studies, and physical education, which are taught throughout Primary 1 to 6. Science is taught from Primary 3 onwards.
