Deposite Refund because of the new circumstance in school

Hello, Only 2 weeks before the end of the academic year 2017-2018 my son’s school announced that they will be going under a massive renovation/construction for the next academic year 2018-2019. This was announced just after the deadline for the deposite fee (3800 dh) for the next academic year. At that stage the school could not provide us any confirmed timetable/ or approved plan for this work. Many parents including me were not happy with the new situation in school which had been announced only 2 weeks before the end of the year and after recieving the deposite for the next year! I decided to withdraw my son because of the health and safety concern and also the school could not assure me that their work would not affect the normal school rutine. At that the account department verbally approved that I can get my deposite back because of the new situation in school. But after 2 months when I followed up with the account dep I was told that the deposite is not refundable because their plan for construction has been approved by KHDA. I think if the school has such a massive plan for the coming academic year they should communicated this before getting the deposite from the parents. I would like to get some advice on this issue. How can I follow up my inquiry legally. Thank you.

Dear Melviki,

I am sorry to hear about the situation at the school.  My advice would be to make contact with the KHDA Customer Service team and discuss this situation with them.  In our experience, the KHDA is generally very supportive of parents.  I would advise you to visit their offices in Dubai Academic City if at all possible as it is often more effective to meet with the team directly.
