What happens if I cannot pay school fees in Dubai?

If I were to have financial difficulties while sending my children to a UAE school, is it as simple as if I can’t pay, they can’t come in, or are schools more forgiving than that?

It is not as simple as that. Schools cannot unilaterally remove a child from school, although they can withhold certain information – grades, transcripts, etc.

All private schools must operate as a business whether they are not-for-profit or for-profit ones otherwise they will cease to exist or, in the best case, have to lower the quality of education for other children – whose parents are paying.

Omitting a child from school is however a serious matter, and no school may exclude a child without the KHDA’s permission. The KHDA’s role is to assist schools and parents in resolving any dispute.

In general, the KHDA does not support action which would disrupt a child’s learning during the school year.

Should you be experiencing difficulties in paying the fees, the first thing to do is make an appointment to see the appropriate person in the school to discuss the matter. It may be that the school can support you through a challenging financial period with a payment plan. Do not stick your head in the sand on this, as it can only lead to you receiving a series of letters and demands that can add stress to your situation.

We believe that most schools will support you during times of financial stress but be fair on yourself and the school by opening up a dialogue.
